When the queue into JB is worst

Going from Singapore into JB, the jams follow the end of the working day and the start of the weekend. From our score history and what commuters report:

  • Weekday evenings from about 6pm to 9pm are the busiest, peaking around 7pm. This is when people who work in Singapore head home to Johor.
  • Friday evening is usually the worst evening of the week, as weekend trips start.
  • Weekday early mornings from about 6am to 8am are busy for cars, lorries and motorcycles too.
  • Weekends are busy for longer but rarely as bad, with the heaviest stretch in the evening.
  • The eve of a public holiday or school holiday gets heavy as families leave early.

The calmest window is usually a weekday from late morning to about 4pm. See the hour-by-hour chart on best time to cross.

What to bring

  • Your passport, valid for at least six months. You can use a QR code from the MyICA app at Singapore immigration, but Malaysia still checks your passport.
  • Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). Singapore citizens do not need one. Most other foreign visitors must submit it online before arriving in Malaysia.
  • For Singapore cars: at least three-quarters of a tank of fuel when you leave Singapore, a Touch 'n Go card with credit for the Malaysian road charge and tolls, and the Malaysian Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) tag. Check JPJ for the latest VEP rules before you drive in.
  • Some ringgit or an e-wallet, as not every shop takes cards.

Ways to beat the queue

  • Check both crossings. If Woodlands is jialat and Tuas is mild, the longer drive to Tuas often still wins. The live score above shows both.
  • Leave before 5pm or after 9pm on a weekday if you can.
  • By bus, start from Kranji or Woodlands instead of town. Buses from Queen Street sit in the same jam on the BKE.
  • Use the QR code lane at Woodlands and Tuas to skip handing over passports.
  • Read the latest reports on the live page. People at the checkpoint often say which part is slow: the BKE, the Singapore booths, or the Malaysian side.

Common questions

What is the best time to drive from Singapore to JB?

On a weekday, late morning to about 4pm is usually the calmest. Avoid 6pm to 9pm, Friday evenings and the eve of public holidays. Weekend mornings are usually milder than weekend evenings.

Do Singaporeans need the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?

No. Singapore citizens are exempt from the MDAC. Most other foreign visitors must submit it before arriving in Malaysia.

Why must Singapore cars have three-quarters of a tank?

It is a Singapore law for Singapore-registered cars leaving the country. Officers check fuel gauges at Woodlands and Tuas, and you can be fined or turned back if your tank is too low.

Should I take Woodlands or Tuas into JB?

Woodlands is closer to JB city centre, so it is better when traffic is normal. Tuas is better for the west of Johor, Legoland and the highway north, and often faster when the Causeway is jammed. Compare both live scores before you leave.
