How the jam score works

The Got Jam? score is a number from 0 to 100 that says how jammed a crossing is right now. It is built mainly from what real people at the checkpoint are saying. Here is where it comes from and how much to trust it.

What the numbers mean

ScoreBandWhat it usually feels like
0–25SmoothWalk or drive straight through, little or no queue.
26–50MildSome queue, can tahan.
51–75JialatLong queue, plan for a real wait.
76–100ExtremeVery long queue. Go later or try the other crossing.

There are separate scores for each crossing, each direction, and for people and buses versus cars and motorcycles. A bus queue at CIQ and a car queue on the BKE are very different things.

Where the reports come from

  • Telegram groups. Big public groups where commuters post updates from the queue, like "170 queue until the escalator" or "BKE jam until Kranji".
  • Facebook groups. Public JB–SG traffic groups, many of them in Chinese, read by an automated reader with human oversight.
  • Your reports. Anyone can tap Report jam on the live page and say how it looks.
  • Public data. LTA bus arrival and crowding data help fill the gaps when nobody is posting.

The full list of groups and data sources is on our sources page. All community posts belong to the people who wrote them.

How a post becomes a score

An AI model reads each post and decides which crossing, which direction and which kind of traveller it is about, and how bad it sounds. It understands Singlish, Malay and Chinese, local landmarks and phrases like "jam until the toll". Posts that are not about the queue are ignored.

Newer reports count more than older ones, and a report stops counting after about two hours. When several people say the same thing, the score is more confident. The score updates every couple of minutes.

When the score is an estimate

Sometimes nobody has posted for a while, especially late at night or at Tuas. Then the score leans on what is usual for that hour and day of the week, and on live LTA data. We mark these scores as an estimate (on the live page it says "tikam-tikam only") so you know to take it with a pinch of salt.

The score is always our best guess, never an official figure. Booth staffing, weather, security checks and accidents can change the queue very fast. Official instructions from ICA, LTA and Malaysian immigration always come first.

Common questions

Is the Got Jam? score official?

No. Got Jam? is an independent project and is not linked to any government agency. The score is our best estimate from community reports and public data.

How often does the score update?

Every couple of minutes. Reports fade out over about two hours, so the score follows the queue as it changes.

Why does the score say estimate?

When few people have reported recently, the score leans on what is usual for that hour and on live LTA data. It is marked as an estimate so you know it is less certain.

Do you use traffic cameras to work out the score?

No. We show the LTA traffic cameras so you can see for yourself, but the score itself comes from reports by people and from LTA bus data.
