RTS Link: the new train between Woodlands and JB

The RTS Link is a short train line across the Strait of Johor, from Woodlands North in Singapore to Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru. It is due to open in February 2027. Here is what we know so far, and what it means for the Causeway queue.

What the RTS Link is

The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link runs on its own bridge next to the Causeway. The ride between the two stations takes about five minutes. It is designed to carry up to 10,000 passengers an hour in each direction, which is a lot of people who no longer need to squeeze onto a bus at CIQ.

In Singapore, Woodlands North station connects to the Thomson–East Coast MRT line. In Johor, Bukit Chagar station sits close to JB Sentral and the city centre.

Opening date

In October 2026 the start of passenger service was set for February 2027, about a month later than first planned. Before it opens, the operator must finish its last system tests and trial runs, get an independent safety check, and get final approval from both countries.

The exact opening day, fares and ticketing have not been confirmed here yet. We will update this page when the operators announce them. Always check the official announcements before you plan a trip around it.

How clearance will work

Both countries will have their immigration and customs at each station. You clear Singapore and Malaysia together at the station you leave from, then step off the train at the other end like a domestic trip. That is very different from the Causeway bus, where you get off at two separate checkpoints.

Because of this, the queue that matters for the RTS Link is the one before you board. Once it opens, Got Jam? will show an RTS queue score built from reports by riders, the same way we do for Woodlands and Tuas.

What it means for the Causeway

Many of the people who now take the 170, 950 or CW buses across the Causeway every morning may switch to the train. That could make the bus queues at Woodlands and CIQ shorter, especially on weekday mornings into Singapore. Cars and motorcycles will still use the Causeway and the Second Link, so the road jams will not disappear.

The KTM Shuttle Tebrau train between Woodlands and JB Sentral is expected to stop running within about six months after the RTS Link opens.

Common questions

When does the RTS Link open?

Passenger service is due to start in February 2027, after final tests, an independent safety check and approval from both governments. The exact day has not been announced yet.

Where are the RTS Link stations?

Woodlands North in Singapore, which links to the Thomson–East Coast MRT line, and Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, close to JB Sentral.

How long is the RTS Link ride?

About five minutes between the two stations. You also need time to clear immigration and customs at the station you leave from.

Do I clear immigration twice on the RTS Link?

No. Singapore and Malaysia immigration are both at the departure station, so you clear once before you board and walk out at the other end.

Will Got Jam? show an RTS Link jam score?

Yes. Once the line opens, we will show a queue score for the RTS Link built from rider reports, next to Woodlands and Tuas.
